Jaime Munguia, a former world champion who recently fought Canelo Alvarez, has failed a drugs test after his latest fight. The news comes as a big setback for the boxer's attempts to get back to the top.

VADA, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association, reported on Wednesday that Munguia's A-sample showed an adverse finding. The Ring Magazine shared that the urine sample, taken on May 4, 2023, returned an adverse analytical finding for exogenous origin of testosterone metabolites. Munguia now has 10 days to ask for his B-sample to be tested.

The failed test relates to Munguia's rematch with Bruno Surace in May 2023. Munguia won that fight, getting revenge for a shock loss to the French fighter in December 2022. That first bout saw Surace knock Munguia out in the sixth round, an upset so big it was named The Ring's Upset of the Year.

Munguia's career seemed to be back on track after the rematch win. He even got a shot at Canelo Alvarez, the undisputed super-middleweight champion, in May 2024. Canelo won that fight by unanimous decision, with scores of 117-110, 116-111, and 115-112, even dropping Munguia during the bout.

Canelo has been extremely active as the 168lbs champion. He's fought most of the top contenders in the division. Just before facing Munguia, Canelo beat William Scull in May 2023 to add the IBF belt to his WBC, WBA, and WBO collection.

After their fight, Munguia started training with Canelo and his coach Eddy Reynoso. But now, this failed drug test puts a big cloud over Munguia's future in boxing. It's a huge blow to his hopes of getting back to world champion status, something he last achieved as WBO light middleweight champion from 2018 to 2019.
