Floyd Mayweather Jr. doesn't think Canelo Alvarez's power will be too much for Terence Crawford. The retired champ shared his thoughts as Canelo gets ready to face Crawford on Saturday, September 13.
Mayweather knows Canelo's skills firsthand. He beat the Mexican star back in 2013, unifying the WBC and WBA world light-middleweight titles. While the judges' scorecards made it seem closer than it was, Mayweather put on a masterclass that night.
Four years after that fight, Mayweather hung up his gloves with a perfect 50-0 record. He'd won world titles in five different weight classes. Canelo, on the other hand, kept climbing. He's now the face of boxing and holds all the belts at super-middleweight.
Crawford, nicknamed "Bud", will move up in weight to challenge Canelo. The fight will likely happen in Las Vegas, though that's not set in stone yet. If Crawford wins, he'll be the first male boxer ever to be undisputed champ in three weight classes. It's a big ask, and definitely the toughest test of his career.
When asked if he was worried about Canelo's power being too much for Crawford, Mayweather didn't hesitate.
"Not at all. It's nothing I never felt before after being in the sport over 20 years."
Mayweather's words might give Crawford a boost. But moving up to face a hard-hitting champ like Canelo won't be easy. Crawford will have to bring his A-game if he wants to make history on September 13.
