David Benavidez wants to fight Terence Crawford if Crawford beats Canelo Alvarez. The undefeated WBC world light-heavyweight champion said he'd drop back down to super-middleweight for the chance.
Benavidez, known as "The Mexican Monster," changed his tune about making 168 pounds again. He told the "Pound 4 Pound with Kamaru & Henry" show:
"I don't wanna make 168, Well if that's [Crawford beats Canelo] yeah, f**k yeah. I can make 168, it's all on the dieting, I don't enjoy it but I can make 168, but that would be cool."
Crawford, the 37-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska, has his sights set on making history. He's going for his fifth weight class world title and wants to be the first male boxer to win undisputed championships in three divisions. He's already done it at light-welterweight and welterweight.
Crawford will fight Canelo Alvarez, the undisputed super-middleweight champion, on Saturday, September 13. The venue hasn't been confirmed yet, but it'll be somewhere in the USA.
Crawford has said Canelo is the only fight he wants at super-middleweight. So, a match-up with Benavidez isn't likely right now.
Benavidez got a boost in April when he was made WBC champion at 175 pounds after Dmitry Bivol gave up the title. He'll probably defend his title for the first time in the next few months. Callum Smith and Anthony Yarde are possible opponents.
