Manny Pacquiao is getting ready to step back into the boxing ring. The 46-year-old Filipino legend will face Mario Barrios on Saturday, July 19, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Pacquiao, known as "PacMan," won world titles in eight different weight classes during his remarkable career. He last fought professionally in 2021, losing to Yordenis Ugas. Since then, he's only had two exhibition matches - one against DK Yoo in 2022 and another versus Rukiya Anpo earlier this year.
Now, the former champ is aiming for another world title. He'll challenge Barrios for the WBC world welterweight championship. USA Today reported the fight details, which have gotten mixed reactions from boxing fans.
Juan Manuel Marquez, Pacquiao's old rival, shared his thoughts on the comeback. In an interview with Pro Box TV, Marquez said:
"If Pacquiao feels good, no shoulder, knee, or foot injuries, and he's perfectly fine — let's give him the benefit of the doubt. Let's see what kind of fight he has to put up against Mario Barrios."
Marquez, who fought Pacquiao four times, pointed out some key factors to watch:
"Will he be aggressive? Will he rely on his power? Because power is the last thing a fighter loses. Let's give the benefit of the doubt to a historic fighter."
The Mexican boxing legend also mentioned Pacquiao's reputation and punching power:
"What matters is the integrity of the fighter. Pacquiao still hits hard. Let's see how Barrios handles that."
Some people worry about the risks for Pacquiao at his age. Others think he might be coming back for the money. But one thing's for sure - seeing a legend like Pacquiao fight for a world title at 46 is pretty special.
The boxing world will watch closely to see if Pacquiao can turn back the clock and capture another world championship. It's a tall order against a younger champion like Barrios, but Pacquiao has surprised us before.
