Manny Pacquiao is getting back in the ring. The 46-year-old boxing legend will face WBC Welterweight Champion Mario Barrios on July 19 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Pacquiao announced his return on social media, saying,
"On July 19, I return to the ring to face WBC Welterweight Champion Mario Barrios at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Let's make history!"
If Pacquiao beats Barrios, he'll break his own record as the oldest welterweight world champion in boxing history. It's a big challenge for the Filipino star, who retired in September 2021 after losing to Yordenis Ugas.
Since then, Pacquiao has done a couple of exhibitions. Fans noticed he wasn't as quick as before, but his team said it was because he didn't train properly.
Oscar De La Hoya, who Pacquiao beat in 2008, thinks the comeback could work. He told reporters:
"I wish him all the best. Can he do it? Absolutely. Manny Pacquiao is a legend. I think he can do it. It's not gonna be easy, but I think he can do it."
The WBC has gotten some flak for letting Pacquiao challenge for a world title after being out of the pro ranks for four years.
Barrios, the current champ, is 30 years old. He just fought Abel Ramos to a split draw while defending his 147-pound title.
The fight is set for July 19, and boxing fans are eager to see if Pacquiao still has what it takes to compete at the highest level.
