Roberto Duran, the Panamanian boxing icon, claims he could have beaten Floyd Mayweather if they had fought. The former champion believes he'd have found ways to get the better of the undefeated American.
Mayweather retired with a perfect 50-0 record and world titles in five weight classes. He beat top fighters like Canelo Alvarez, Oscar De La Hoya, and Manny Pacquiao. Many consider him one of boxing's greatest defensive fighters.
But Duran, who's seen as one of the best boxers ever, doesn't think Mayweather was all that special. In a recent YouTube interview, he didn't hold back his thoughts on how a fight between them would have gone.
"If Mayweather had fought with me, I would have broke all his ribs!"
Duran says he'd have focused on attacking Mayweather's body, especially his ribs and liver. He thinks Mayweather's defensive style left openings he could have taken advantage of.
The Panamanian legend didn't stop there. He criticized Mayweather's last performance, saying he looked slow and lacked punching power. Duran also claimed Mayweather hadn't fought anyone significant.
It's worth noting that Duran's peak came in the early to mid-1980s. He famously beat Sugar Ray Leonard in 1980 to win the WBC welterweight title, cementing his place among boxing's greats.
Mayweather, now 48, hung up his gloves with an incredible list of achievements. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, capping off a career that included wins over some of the sport's biggest names.
While we'll never know how a fight between these two legends in their prime would have played out, it's clear Duran believes he'd have found a way to hand Mayweather his first loss.
