Jake Paul defeated Mike Tyson in a surprising heavyweight clash last November. The 27-year-old YouTube sensation turned pro boxer outpointed the 58-year-old former champion over eight rounds at AT&T; Stadium in Texas.
Tyson stepped back into the ring for his first professional fight in nearly two decades. His last bout ended in a 6th round stoppage loss to Kevin McBride back in 2005. Paul, on the other hand, had won all but one of his career bouts heading into the matchup.
The fight went the full eight rounds, with Paul getting the nod from all three judges. The younger fighter frustrated "Iron Mike" throughout the contest, becoming just the seventh man to defeat Tyson in a professional ring.
Tyson looked a shadow of his former self during the bout. His performance drew criticism from Mexican boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. At a recent press conference for Paul's upcoming fight against Chavez's son, the elder Chavez didn't mince words:
"With all due respect, fighting Mike Tyson, I think I would have given him a better fight. He didn't throw one punch all fight, how can you win without throwing punches? Tyson only threw punches in the first round. Who did Jake Paul beat that night?"
Paul will look to build on his win over Tyson when he faces Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on June 28th at the Honda Center in Anaheim. A victory would push the Cleveland native closer to his goal of securing a shot at a world title.
The bout with Chavez Jr, a former WBC middleweight champion, gives Paul a chance to prove himself against a more established boxer. It'll be another step up in competition as he tries to silence his critics and make his mark in the sport.
