Mauricio Sulaiman, the World Boxing Council (WBC) president, has agreed to a potential fight between Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and singer Bad Bunny. There's just one small catch - Bad Bunny must first defeat the winner of Canelo's upcoming bout with Terence Crawford.
The unexpected twist comes after Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito, claimed he's got what it takes to beat Canelo. In a video with Spanish streamer Ibai Llanos, the singer boasted he could knock out the 168-pound champion, who has never been floored in his professional career.
Sulaiman responded to Bad Bunny's bold statement with an equally surprising offer:
"Dear Benito, Bad Bunny, I want you to know that the World Boxing Council (WBC) is going to rank you number one mandatory challenger for the winner of Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford. Start getting ready, daddy. Go for it Bad Bunny."
This bizarre turn of events fits into a growing trend of public figures and celebrities stepping into the boxing ring. Bad Bunny isn't entirely new to combat sports, though. He's got some experience in professional wrestling, having won the WWE 24/7 Championship in 2021 and taking part in WrestleMania 37.
During his WWE stint, Bad Bunny teamed up with Damien Priest and managed to defeat established performers like Akira Tozawa, The Miz, and John Morrison. But taking on Canelo Alvarez in a boxing match would be a whole different ball game.
Canelo is set to face Terence Crawford on September 12 in Las Vegas. If Bad Bunny wants his shot, he'll need to wait for that fight to play out first. Then, somehow, he'd need to beat the winner - a task that even the world's top boxers have struggled with.
While it's hard to take this challenge seriously, stranger things have happened in boxing. For now, we'll have to wait and see if Bad Bunny's bark is as big as his bite, or if this is just another case of a celebrity punching above their weight.
