Canelo Alvarez wants another shot at Floyd Mayweather. The Mexican champion recently told DAZN Boxing he's eager to avenge his only professional loss from 2013.
Mayweather, now 48, hung up his gloves in 2017 after beating Conor McGregor in a crossover bout in Las Vegas. Since then, he's kept busy with exhibition matches against Logan Paul, Tenshin Nasukawa, and John Gotti III.
Canelo, on the other hand, has been racking up world titles at middleweight, super-middleweight, and light-heavyweight. He made history as the first fighter in the four-belt era to become undisputed champion at 168lbs after defeating Caleb Plant in 2021. Just recently, he added another win to his record by unanimously outpointing IBF champion William Scull.
Despite his impressive achievements, Canelo still has that 2013 loss to Mayweather on his mind. In a recent interview with DAZN Boxing, he expressed his desire for a rematch:
"Yes, of course [I would like to fight Mayweather again]. I would love the opportunity to get revenge. Obviously we know it's not going to happen but yes, I would love to get rid of that little thorn."
While Canelo admits the rematch is unlikely, his words show how much that loss still bothers him.
For now, Canelo has his sights set on another big fight. He's scheduled to face Terence Crawford on September 12 in what's shaping up to be one of the biggest bouts in boxing history. A win there would add yet another impressive name to Canelo's already stellar resume.
