Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez will face off in Las Vegas on September 12. The fight got announced during Canelo's recent bout in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The news came as a surprise to many, as it happened during a less-than-thrilling match. Canelo won a 12-round unanimous decision against William Scull in what many called a boring fight. But the announcement of the Crawford-Canelo showdown got everyone's attention.
Meanwhile, in New York's Times Square, another boxing event was taking place. Ryan Garcia and Rolly Romero were there, along with some big names in boxing. Mike Tyson, Roberto Duran, Lennox Lewis, and Bernard Hopkins all showed up. So did up-and-coming boxers Keyshawn Davis and Shakur Stevenson, as well as Crawford himself.
On the streets of Manhattan, Keyshawn Davis had some bold words about his fellow boxers:
"Nobody can beat us. We are the best boxers,"
Davis was talking about himself, Stevenson, and Crawford.
Mike Tyson, the former heavyweight champ, gave Crawford a big thumbs up:
"Terence Crawford has shown over the years that he is a great versatile boxer; he is going to be very successful. Great, great success."
Crawford, who's from Nebraska, now faces the biggest challenge of his career. He'll take on Canelo, the Mexican star who's been dominating multiple weight classes.
The September bout is one fans have wanted to see for a long time. Crawford's shown he can handle himself in the ring. But Canelo's a tough opponent who's beaten many top fighters.
Now, the question on everyone's mind is: Can Crawford be the one to beat Canelo when they meet in Las Vegas? We'll have to wait until September to find out.
