Chris Eubank Sr has spoken out about his son's upcoming fight with Conor Benn. The bout, set for April 26, comes after almost three years of build-up and a previous cancellation in October 2022 due to Benn's positive test for a banned substance.
Eubank Sr, who used to be his son's cornerman and trainer, has been critical of the match-up. He's suggested the fight shouldn't happen because of the weight difference between the two boxers. Benn, naturally a welterweight, will move up to 160 lbs for this middleweight clash against Eubank Jr, who has fought at both middleweight and super-middleweight.
The former world champion didn't hold back when discussing his son's boxing style. He said:
"The style that you had was incredible but you changed that style to that of Mr Jones. This has made you, in my view, an ordinary fighter. You should never have really changed your style, your style was one of brilliance."
Eubank Sr criticized his son for becoming a reflex fighter, dropping his hands, and decreasing in ability after changing his style to mimic Roy Jones Jr.
Chris Eubank Jr's career has seen some significant changes. He started with his father by his side but later went on his own path. He's worked with trainers like Roy Jones Jr and Brian 'BoMac' McIntyre. Now, he's training under Jonathon Banks, who used to coach Gennady Golovkin.
Recently, Eubank Jr has had a mix of results. He suffered his first knockout loss to Liam Smith but bounced back with a stoppage win in their rematch. In October, he scored a KO victory over Kamil Szeremeta.
The fight against Benn on April 26 will be the biggest night of Eubank Jr's career. It's a match-up that's been brewing for years, with both fighters having to overcome obstacles to make it happen.
As the fight approaches, all eyes will be on how Eubank Jr performs and whether his father's harsh words will have any impact on his performance in the ring.
