David Benavides (30-0-0, 24 KOs) will soon again be granted mandatory status to fight absolute world light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol (24-1, 12 KOs), this time by the WBA. The WBC also recently scheduled such a fight, but Bivol refused to make a mandatory defense against the American and left the World Boxing Council title vacant.
David Benavidez is the regular World Boxing Association champion in the 79 kg weight class after his victory over David Morrell in February. The WBA management will soon set a date by which Bivol must defend his belt in a fight with Benavides.
Bivol, who currently holds the IBF, WBA and WBO belts, is due for a third fight with Artur Beterbiev in October before targeting a rematch with Saul Alvarez. Therefore, it is quite possible that the 34-year-old will give up another championship title.
