Dmitry Bivol's decision to vacate the WBC light heavyweight title has thrown a curveball at David Benavidez's plans. The move caught Team Benavidez off guard, forcing them to quickly reassess their options.
Jose Benavidez Sr., David's father and team member, shared his surprise in a recent interview with MillCity Boxing.
"I didn't think Bivol would drop the belt like that. We were hoping to make that fight happen."
With Bivol now focusing on finishing his trilogy with Artur Beterbiev, Team Benavidez is looking at other potential opponents. Callum Smith, who holds the WBO interim belt, is one possibility. Smith's recent rebound after losing to Beterbiev makes him an attractive option. However, Benavidez Sr. pointed out a potential hurdle:
"Smith's promoter, Eddie Hearn, might not want to risk that WBC fight if he thinks Bivol or Beterbiev is a better payday."
Another contender on their radar is Anthony Yarde. Yarde is set to face Lyndon Arthur on April 26 in London, which could push a potential showdown with Benavidez to late summer or early fall.
Despite the uncertainty, Team Benavidez remains focused on challenging fights. Benavidez Sr. emphasized their approach:
"Whoever the fans want, we'll fight. These are not easy fights, but we're not looking for easy. We just want to keep pushing forward."
The team's long-term goals still include facing the winner - or even the loser - of the Bivol-Beterbiev trilogy. They're willing to wait for that opportunity to materialize.
A potential fight with Canelo Alvarez remains on their wish list. Benavidez Sr. made it clear they're ready for that challenge at any weight:
"We'll fight him at 168, 175, cruiserweight-whatever. But with him, there's always some excuse."
As Team Benavidez navigates these new developments, they're keeping their options open and staying prepared for whatever opportunities come their way. The boxing world will be watching closely to see which path David Benavidez takes next in his quest for championship glory.
