Billy Joe Saunders might step back into the ring to face his old rival Chris Eubank Jr. The former WBO middleweight and super-middleweight champion hasn't fought since May 2021, but a rematch with Eubank Jr. could change that.
Saunders grabbed the WBO middleweight title in 2015 by beating Andy Lee. He moved up to super-middleweight and won that belt too in 2019. Along the way, he successfully defended his titles against tough opponents like Willie Monroe Jr. and David Lemieux.
His last fight didn't go as planned. Saunders lost his WBO super-middleweight title to Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in May 2021 when he got knocked out. Since then, he's been out of the boxing scene.
But now, there's talk about Saunders coming back to face Eubank Jr. These two have history. Saunders beat Eubank Jr. on points earlier in his career, and they've never liked each other much.
Izzy Asif, a promoter from GBM Sports, spilled the beans about recent negotiations in an interview with iFL TV:
"I'm going to tell you know, this is no secret, Billy will tell you, we were really close in negotiations. An offer was on the table for the Eubank team. I was involved in the deal, I was part of Billy's team, and there were talks of it."
Asif didn't want to say too much, but he hinted that the fight could still happen:
"But listen, I'm not going to say anything else, It could happen again. That fight could happen. Eubank-Billy Joe, great fight, real rivalry, no acting up, they genuinely don't like each other."
Fans have wanted to see this rematch for a while. The bad blood between Saunders and Eubank Jr. is real, which makes it an exciting prospect.
Right now, Eubank Jr. has his hands full. He's got a fight coming up on April 26 against Conor Benn at middleweight. That's another big rivalry fight for Eubank Jr.
We'll have to wait and see if Saunders and Eubank Jr. can work out a deal for their rematch. If it happens, it'll be a big comeback for Saunders and a chance to settle an old score.
