Terence Crawford's getting ready for a big fight with Canelo Alvarez. The two champions might face off in September for Alvarez's super middleweight titles.
Shawn Porter knows what it's like to be in the ring with Crawford. The two-time welterweight world champion faced him in 2021, in what turned out to be Porter's last professional fight. Crawford stopped Porter in the 10th round, leading to Porter's retirement announcement.
Since then, Crawford's career has soared. He became the undisputed welterweight champion with a defining win over Errol Spence Jr. He didn't stop there. Crawford moved up in weight and won the WBA super welterweight title in a tough fight against Israil Madrimov in August.
Now, Crawford's set his sights on an even bigger challenge. He's aiming to fight Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, the current WBC, WBA, and WBO super middleweight champion. It's going to be Crawford's toughest test yet.
Porter shared his thoughts on Crawford's punching power in an interview with Aliyah Orozco.
"With Crawford we've learned, don't blink. While it seems boring for quite a few rounds then all of a sudden it just ends."
In another interview with KO Artist Sports, Porter dug deeper into Crawford's punching technique.
"Even if he connects and you're not out, he's going to keep coming and he's going to hit you. I kind of describe Terence's power as more of a whip because he throws his power with speed. It coins the phrase, 'Speed makes power.'
So his power is kind of disguised because of his speed, which I think makes it more of a whip. It's not going to take a long time to get there, it's going to get there fast and it's going to pop you."
Before Crawford and Canelo can meet, Canelo's got another fight lined up. He's set to face William Scull for the IBF super middleweight title on May 3 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. If Canelo wins, Crawford will have a shot at becoming a three-weight undisputed champion. That's something no male boxer has ever done in the four-belt era.
