Canelo Alvarez doesn't want to fight David Benavidez. The Mexican superstar says Benavidez hasn't done enough to earn a shot and acts disrespectfully.
In a recent interview with FightHype, Canelo spoke his mind about the rising contender. He didn't hold back.
"By the way he talks, he thinks he's Superman. He's very disrespectful, not only to me, but to everyone."
Canelo believes Benavidez's resume doesn't match his talk. He pointed out that Benavidez isn't even a champion right now.
"He's achieved nothing. He's not even a champion. He's not even in my category. There are many things that don't make sense."
But Benavidez has been making waves in the division. He's racked up impressive wins over Caleb Plant, Demetrius Andrade, Oleksandr Gvozdyk, and David Morrell Jr. These victories have put him in the conversation for bigger fights.
Boxing experts aren't buying Canelo's reasons. Many see his arguments as evasive and flimsy. They're getting frustrated with the champ's stance on this potential matchup.
Canelo made it clear he'll choose his own path from here on out.
"In this point of my career, I can do whatever I want."
For now, Canelo's focus is on his next fight. He'll face William Scull on May 3 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. His goal is to unify all the 168-pound championships.
If Canelo gets past Scull, there's talk of a possible September showdown with Terence Crawford. But that fight depends on Canelo unifying the super middleweight titles first.
