George Kambosos Jr, the former unified lightweight champion from Australia, has revealed he got an offer to fight Floyd Mayweather in a big stadium back home.
Kambosos shared this surprising news on March 25, 2025, while responding to a report about a potential fight with Floyd Schofield. He wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
"I actually was offered Floyd Mayweather not some guy from Prison Break … Yes in Australia, big stadium fight."
Mayweather, who retired in 2017 with a perfect 50-0 record, has been traveling the globe for exhibition bouts since then. He's faced Logan Paul, John Gott III, and Tenshin Nasukawa, making serious money without breaking a sweat.
The defensive master won titles in five weight classes during his pro career. He beat some of the biggest names in boxing, including Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, Manny Pacquiao, Ricky Hatton, and Miguel Cotto.
Mayweather's last pro fight was a box office smash against UFC star Conor McGregor. That bout added a new dimension to the sport and capped off an incredible career.
Kambosos has had his own share of big moments in boxing. He shocked the world by beating Teofimo Lopez to become the unified lightweight champion. He later lost to Devin Haney in a bid to become undisputed champ and came up short against Vasily Lomachenko for a vacant belt.
The Aussie fighter recently moved up to super lightweight. He won a points decision over Jake Wyllie this past weekend and looks to be heading towards a shot at IBF Champion Richardson Hitchins.
While a pro return for Mayweather has been talked about, he usually dismisses the idea himself. It's not clear when Kambosos got the offer to fight him or why it didn't happen. But the thought of Mayweather coming out of retirement for a stadium fight in Australia certainly gets the imagination going.
