Floyd Mayweather's perfect 50-0 record has come under fire from boxing legend Roberto Duran. The former four-weight world champion doesn't buy into Mayweather's undefeated status.
Mayweather wrapped up his career as a five-weight world champion, grabbing titles from super-featherweight all the way up to super-welterweight. He beat some of the biggest names in boxing, including Manny Pacquiao, Canelo Alvarez, Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosley, and Miguel Cotto. Many see him as one of the best fighters of his time.
But Duran, who's no slouch himself with world titles in four weight classes, isn't impressed. In a chat with One On One Boxing, he pulled no punches when talking about Mayweather's skills and record.
"For me he is a boxer that's weak. He doesn't like being hit to the body, and as soon as he gets hit there, he turns into a road runner, and I have much more experience than him."
Duran didn't stop there. He claimed Mayweather's unbeaten record isn't quite what it seems:
"He fought a Mexican, the Mexican beat him, but they gave it to him [Mayweather]. Then he fought another, he lost but got the decision. I believe he's lost three fights but they've gifted him those wins."
Duran might be referring to Mayweather's close call with Jose Luis Castillo back in April 2002. Mayweather won that fight on points, but a lot of people thought Castillo should've gotten the nod. Mayweather won the rematch eight months later, but the first fight still raises eyebrows.
It's worth noting that Duran isn't alone in questioning Mayweather's record. Canelo Alvarez, who lost to Mayweather in 2013, has also said Mayweather shouldn't be unbeaten.
Mayweather's supporters might point to his recent induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame as proof of his greatness. But for old-school fighters like Duran, who boxed across five decades, Mayweather's perfect record just doesn't add up.
