Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez wants another shot at Floyd Mayweather Jr. The Mexican superstar has said he'd love to get revenge on the retired champion, even though he knows it's not likely to happen.
Canelo's career has been stellar. He's won world titles in four weight classes, from super welterweight all the way up to light heavyweight. He's currently the unified super-middleweight champion and one of boxing's biggest stars. But in his 66 fights, he's lost twice. One of those losses was to Dmitry Bivol at 175lbs. The other? Floyd Mayweather Jr. back in 2013.
That fight with Mayweather was billed as a passing of the torch. It didn't turn out that way. Mayweather, nearly 40 at the time, put on a boxing masterclass and won easily on the scorecards.
In a recent interview with DAZN Boxing, Canelo opened up about wanting another crack at Mayweather:
"Yes, of course [I would like to fight Mayweather again]. I would love the opportunity to get revenge. Obviously we know it's not going to happen but yes, I would love to get rid of that little thorn."
Mayweather hasn't fought professionally since 2017 when he beat MMA star Conor McGregor in McGregor's boxing debut. He's shown no interest in coming back to face Canelo. In fact, he's been pretty dismissive of the Mexican star. Speaking to Fighthype, Mayweather said:
"You can take a guy like Canelo. I'll tell the truth about Canelo. The mo**erf**ker was easy. A cakewalk, easy. You're all praising this dude. He was nothing. I was almost 40 and I cooked this dude, easy."
While a rematch seems off the table, Canelo isn't sitting around waiting. He's got a fight coming up on May 3 against William Scull. He'll be looking to regain his undisputed status at 168lbs and continue building his own legacy as one of boxing's greats.
