Sampson Lewkowicz, Benavidez's promoter, sent an offer to Bivol's lawyer last Thursday. The deal lets Bivol's team pick any month from September to December for the fight, which would be organized by Premier Boxing Champions (PBC).
But so far, there's been radio silence from Bivol's side. Lewkowicz said:
"I've sent an offer but I've not heard back. There's been no negotiations, just one letter."
Despite the lack of response, Lewkowicz remains hopeful:
"I hope it becomes a reality, because we would love that fight."
Bivol, the light heavyweight champ, has been busy lately. He's fought on Riyadh Season bills against Malik Zinad and Artur Beterbiev. In his battles with Beterbiev, Bivol lost a close first fight but came back to win the rematch by decision, becoming the first fighter to beat Beterbiev.
Meanwhile, Benavidez, a rising star in boxing, has been making moves too. He was spotted ringside in Saudi Arabia, likely scouting for opportunities.
The Riyadh Season organizers seem to prefer a decider between Beterbiev and Bivol. But they're also open to Bivol addressing his WBC mandatory, which happens to be Benavidez.
Fans are excited about the potential Bivol-Benavidez matchup. But for now, it's all up in the air. The next few weeks will be crucial in deciding if this fight will actually happen.
