Larry Holmes, the former heavyweight champion, says he's the best heavyweight boxer ever. Holmes made this bold claim in a recent interview with Sky Sports, challenging the widespread belief that Muhammad Ali holds that title.

Holmes, who defeated Ali in 1980, believes his achievements surpass those of "The Greatest" and other heavyweight champions. He held the world heavyweight title from 1978 to 1985, making 20 straight title defenses during his seven-and-a-half-year reign.

"Everyone said I was just a copy of Muhammad Ali, just because I idolised they guy, he hit, boxed, moved around and looked good, I like his style, I copied some of his styles, his jabs and moves and whatnot and I bettered it."

Holmes argues he doesn't get the recognition he deserves, especially when compared to other boxing icons like Mike Tyson. He points out the length of his championship reign as evidence of his greatness.

"I don't get the recognition that I should get, like a Mike Tyson. Hey listen, I had 20 title defences, Mike Tyson had three or four and lost, I was champion for seven and a half years, he was champion for seven months, they don't want to recognise me."

The former champ directly challenges Ali's status as the greatest, highlighting his own accomplishments.

"Ali don't have the fight record that I have with defending the title, he didn't hold his title for seven and a half years. Why can't I fit in that box, why does Muhammad Ali have to be the greatest, he can say he's the greatest, you can say he's the greatest, but I know different, I'm the greatest."

Ali, a three-time lineal heavyweight champion, is widely regarded as a boxing icon. He was involved in legendary fights like the 'Rumble in the Jungle' against George Foreman and the 'Thrilla in Manila' against Joe Frazier.

Holmes, who retired in 2002 with a record of 69 wins and 6 defeats, reveals he has one career regret. He wishes he had faced one heavyweight legend during his time in the ring, though he doesn't name the specific boxer.

You can watch Holmes' full interview on Sky Sports' YouTube channel, where he elaborates on his claim to be the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time.
