Gervonta Davis Explains Controversial Knee Drop Against Roach: "I Had To Do It"

The fight took an unexpected turn in the ninth round when Davis dropped to one knee and retreated to his corner. Referee Steve Willis didn't count it as a knockdown, a decision that became a major talking point after the fight.

Davis explained his actions in the ring:

"I got my hair done two days ago and she put grease in it. It burned my eyes. Why are you booing like this is bulls**t. It's real facts."

If Willis had scored it as a knockdown, Roach would have gotten a 10-8 round and likely won the fight. Instead it ended in a draw, leaving both fighters and fans calling for a rematch.

After the fight, Davis reflected on his performance:

"I think I pulled it off with the last three rounds for sure. I was catching him with some clean shots. I was breaking him down as the fight went on. I didn't want to make mistakes so I kept it cautious."

He also praised his opponent, saying, "He is a great fighter and has the skills."

Roach didn't hide his disappointment with the decision:

"I'm disappointed in the decision. I thought I pulled it out. I definitely thought I won but we can run it back. If you voluntarily take a knee and the referee starts counting that should be a knockdown. If I get that knockdown I win the fight."

Many expected Davis to win easily, but Roach pushed him to the limit. The outcome surprised boxing experts, with many disagreeing with the referee's decision not to score a knockdown for Roach.

Both fighters expressed interest in a rematch. Davis said, "Hopefully we can run it back for sure. Let's bring it back to New York and have the rematch for sure."

The controversial draw leaves fans eager to see these two square off again to settle the score once and for all.
