Gervonta Davis, the WBA lightweight champion from Baltimore, has named his favorite boxers of all time. The 30-year-old picked Floyd Mayweather Jr and Sugar Ray Leonard as the fighters he admires most.
Davis shared his picks during a recent chat on A Safe Place Podcast. When asked about his top boxers, he said simply,
"I would say Sugar Ray Leonard and Floyd Mayweather."
The choice of Mayweather is interesting, given their history. Floyd used to promote Davis through Mayweather Promotions, but they split up in 2022. Since then, Davis has even talked about wanting to fight Mayweather. Floyd, now 47, hasn't had a pro fight since beating Conor McGregor in 2017. He's only done exhibition matches lately, taking on Logan Paul, Tenshin Nasukawa, and John Gotti III.
Davis has won world titles in three weight classes so far. He's getting ready to defend his WBA lightweight belt against Lamont Roach Jr on March 1 in New York City. The fight will be Davis's first title defense of 2024.
Looking ahead, Davis might face other top lightweights like WBC champ Shakur Stevenson or the newly-crowned WBO titleholder Keyshawn Davis. But he's also hinted at hanging up his gloves soon, saying he might retire before the end of 2025 because he's grown tired of the sport.
Even with retirement on his mind, Davis still dreams big. He's mentioned wanting a fight with Mayweather on his ideal fight card. It seems the admiration for his former promoter remains strong, despite their business split.
For now, Davis continues to make his mark in the ring, following in the footsteps of his boxing heroes Mayweather and Leonard. Fans will have to wait and see if he can match their legendary careers before he calls it quits.
