Lennox Lewis has spoken about Daniel Dubois' chances in a potential rematch with Oleksandr Usyk. The former undisputed heavyweight champion weighed in on the situation following Dubois' demand for another shot at the Ukrainian.
Dubois and Usyk first met in August 2023 for the heavyweight titles. Usyk won by stoppage in the ninth round, but not without controversy. In the fifth, Dubois landed a body shot that floored Usyk. The referee ruled it a low blow, giving Usyk time to recover. Many fans and pundits argued it was a legal punch that should have resulted in a knockout win for Dubois.
The Brit has been vocal about getting another crack at Usyk ever since. He even stormed the ring after Usyk's victory over Tyson Fury on December 21 to demand a rematch.
Lewis, speaking to FightHype, gave his thoughts on how Dubois might do in a second fight with Usyk.
"He fares well. He's pretty positive right now and the next goal is he wants to be undisputed champion."
Dubois, now 27, hasn't been sitting around waiting for Usyk. He was elevated to IBF heavyweight champion when Usyk vacated the belt. In his first defense, he knocked out Anthony Joshua in the fifth round.
The Londoner will defend his title again on February 22 against Joseph Parker. The fight will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on the undercard of the Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol rematch.
Usyk, at 38, still holds the WBA, WBO, and IBF heavyweight titles. There had been talk of him retiring after conquering both the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions. But he's decided to continue his professional career. His next fight is expected in 2025, though an opponent and exact date haven't been confirmed.
With both fighters active and on different paths, it remains to be seen if they'll meet in the ring again. But if they do, Lewis thinks Dubois will put up a good fight.
