Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford are getting ready for a big fight later this year. The two champions will face off for the WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight titles. They might even fight for the IBF belt if Canelo wins it back from William Scull in May.
Artur Beterbiev, the undisputed light heavyweight champion, shared his thoughts on the upcoming bout. In an interview with Fight Hype, Beterbiev said:
"It's a 50/50 fight. I'm not really a big fan of boxing, but this fight I will watch."
While Beterbiev didn't say who he thinks will win, he hinted that he might favor Crawford.
Canelo, the 34-year-old Mexican star from Guadalajara, has been the undisputed super middleweight champion since 2021. He's defended his titles four times, beating tough opponents like Caleb Plant, Gennady Golovkin, and Jermell Charlo. But last summer, Canelo lost his IBF belt when he chose to fight Edgar Berlanga instead of the mandatory challenger.
Crawford, known as "Bud," is 37 years old and has a perfect 41-0 record. He's won world titles in four weight classes and was the undisputed champion at super lightweight and welterweight. Now, he wants to become a five-weight world champion.
In August 2023, Crawford moved up to light middleweight and beat Israil Madrimov for the WBA title. But some people thought he didn't look as good as usual in that fight.
Many boxing fans worry that moving up to super middleweight might be too much for Crawford. Canelo has been dominating at 168 pounds since he became the undisputed champion. Beterbiev used to say Crawford was the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, but now he sees the fight as even.
Beterbiev has his own big fight coming up. He'll face Dmitry Bivol later this month in a rematch. Interestingly, Bivol has fought Canelo before.
The Canelo-Crawford fight is shaping up to be one of the biggest boxing events of the year. Even fighters like Beterbiev, who don't usually watch much boxing, are excited to see it.
