Terence Crawford got his wish. The four-weight world champion will fight Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in September. But first, Canelo must face a different opponent.
Crawford and Canelo will meet in Las Vegas as part of the Riyadh Season card. The bout will take place at super-middleweight, with a weight limit of 168 pounds. Crawford plans to sit out until the fight, focusing on bulking up from his current 154 pounds.
Crawford aims to make history. He wants to become a three-time undisputed champion and a five-division champion. No male fighter has achieved this feat in the four-belt era.
"Good luck Canelo in your next fight. I'm looking forward to becoming a 3x Undisputed Champion."
Before facing Crawford, Canelo has another challenge. He'll fight William Scull in May in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This bout kicks off Canelo's four-fight deal with the Saudi promotion. It's a chance for Canelo to become a two-time undisputed champion in the division.
Scull, a Cuban fighter, holds a perfect record of 23 wins with 9 knockouts. He recently outpointed Vladimir Shishkin for the IBF title. Scull picked up the vacant belt after it was stripped from Canelo for not facing his mandatory challenger.
The Crawford-Canelo matchup brings together two four-weight world champions. It's a fight that's been years in the making, with Crawford long calling for the opportunity to face the Mexican star.
