Terence Crawford has reportedly landed a fight against Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. The match, set for September 13 this year, comes after Crawford's long pursuit of the Mexican superstar.
Crawford, known as 'Bud', has been on a roll lately. He became the undisputed welterweight champion by beating Errol Spence Jr. Then, he moved up to super-welterweight and won the WBA title from Israil Madrimov. This win closed the weight gap between him and Canelo.
The Madrimov fight ended Crawford's ten-bout stoppage streak. But Crawford didn't find it too challenging. He said:
"I wouldn't say it was my toughest fight. I think 'Mean Machine' was a tougher fight than that. I think Gamboa was a tougher fight than that. I think Benavidez was a tougher fight than that."
Crawford's power against Madrimov has raised some eyebrows. He couldn't make a dent in the tough fighter, which might spell trouble when he faces Canelo two weight classes up.
Egidijus 'Mean Machine' Kavaliauskas, who Crawford stopped in nine rounds, shared his thoughts on the potential match-up. The Lithuanian boxer told Dan Rafael on Twitter:
"I hope they don't make that fight. I don't think it's a good idea for Crawford to move up in weight and fight Canelo. Canelo is just too big, too good."
While the September 13 date has been reported, it's not set in stone. Both fighters might take an interim bout beforehand. It's also unclear if Crawford will test the waters with a debut at super-middleweight before facing Canelo.
The switch-hitter from Omaha, Nebraska, will jump two weight classes to meet Canelo. Whether Crawford's skills can overcome this size difference will be the big question leading up to the fight.
