Tyson Fury has called it quits on his boxing career. The former heavyweight champ made the announcement on social media earlier this January, sparking reactions from boxing experts.
Fury, known as "The Gypsy King," has had an impressive run in the sport. He's won belts at British, European, Commonwealth, and World levels. His victory against Wladimir Klitschko made him the lineal champion, and he's famous for his fights with Deontay Wilder, which included one draw and two knockouts.
But recently, Fury's luck changed. He lost two fights in a row to Oleksandr Usyk. The first bout saw Fury trying for undisputed honors, but he lost on points despite a strong effort in the ninth round. In the rematch, Usyk won by unanimous decision, leading to Fury's retirement.
Teddy Atlas, a former trainer, shared his thoughts on YouTube:
"I think it's time. I love Tyson Fury, he's a guy we can all learn from. Everyone uses the words 'don't give up,' but he's lived it. He has taught us that lesson. He went through drugs and alcohol abuse, spiralling downwards, thinking about suicide. What a sad thing."
Atlas highlighted Fury's personal struggles and comeback, praising his resilience:
"The poor guy got that depressed, but he didn't, he came back, he fights for the heavyweight title against one of the best punchers of all time in Wilder, he gets dropped, he's laying there flat like he's dead and what does he do? He gets up, he doesn't quit, then he goes on to have an unparalleled career, earning money, winning titles, then he's involved in these incredible undisputed fights."
Fury's journey hasn't been easy. He's battled drug and alcohol abuse, depression, and even had thoughts of suicide. But he turned things around, earning money, winning titles, and taking part in some of boxing's biggest fights.
Many fans hope Fury's retirement announcement is just a bargaining chip. There's still talk of a potential epic all-British clash with long-term rival Anthony Joshua.
Atlas wrapped up his thoughts on Fury's decision:
"How many times have we seen these fighters when they don't know when to leave? Too many times. If this time is true, all I have to say is God bless, congratulations, thank you for everything you gave us."
Fury's retirement announcement has left the boxing world buzzing, with many wondering if we've truly seen the last of The Gypsy King in the ring.
