Tyson Fury has called it quits on his boxing career for the second time. The former heavyweight champ made the announcement after losing two fights in a row to Oleksandr Usyk. But some people aren't sure if he really means it this time.
Fury first said he was retiring back in April 2022 after beating Dillian Whyte. He told talkSPORT:
"I've been in this game for nearly 20 years - amateur and professional. I'm 34 in a few months. I said the third Wilder fight would be my last but I felt I owed the fans one last showdown. Doing it here at Wembley was phenomenal but, I say, this is definitely the end of the Gypsy King and I went out with a bang."
He made it official that August and even gave up The Ring heavyweight title. But by December, he was back in the ring. He beat Derek Chisora with a 10th-round TKO.
Now Fury's saying he's done again. On January 13, 2024, he posted a video on social media:
"I'm going to make it short and sweet. I'd like to announce my retirement from boxing. It's been a blast. I've loved every single minute of it. I'm going to end with this, 'Dick Turpin wore a mask.' God bless everybody, I'll see you on the other side."
This comes after Fury lost twice to Oleksandr Usyk in 2024. Before that, he barely beat Francis Ngannou in October 2023.
Fury's manager Frank Warren told TNT Sports:
"God bless him. If that's what he wants to do, that's what he should do. I've said it all along. No one should be trying to influence him in the boxing world. What he should do is up to him, at the end of the day - after consulting his family and making discussions. He has made a lot of money, he's had a fantastic career..."
But not everyone's buying it. Eddie Hearn, who manages Anthony Joshua, thinks Fury will be back. He told IFL TV he's sure "The Gypsy King" will return to fight Joshua.
Fury's 36 now. He's had a long career with some breaks. At one point, he stepped away for a while to deal with mental health issues. But he didn't talk about retiring then.
We'll have to wait and see if this retirement sticks or if Fury will lace up the gloves again.
