Former Light Heavyweight Champion Weighs In On Crawford-Canelo Matchup: "It's Not Even Close"

Ronald Crawley Dec. 27, 2024, 12:10 p.m.

Canelo has experience at light heavyweight. He stopped Sergey Kovalev in that division but lost on points to Dmitry Bivol. Crawford will need to put on some weight to make the fight happen.

Kovalev spoke to Fight Hub TV about the potential matchup. He thinks Crawford can win but has some concerns.

"Terence Crawford, great fighter. Huge respect to him. I think he's the best pound-for-pound fighter. But if he will move up… He can beat Canelo, but I don't know how he will be comfortable in his division."

Kovalev worries about how the extra weight will affect Crawford. He thinks it could slow him down and make him less comfortable in the ring.

"What division are they gonna fight? Super-middleweight? It's too big. He will be slower, you know? Because he will be bigger. For a fight every boxer should be losing weight for speed, lightness, movement. It's no good for Crawford. But I know and I see that he can get the win."

The former light heavyweight champ shared his own experience of moving up in weight. He felt slow and uncomfortable when he fought at 200 pounds.

"Canelo will keep his hands up and walk him down. Crawford is very smart, but nobody knows how he will feel at super-middleweight. It's too much weight. I did a fight at 200 pounds, I wasn't light-heavy, I was slow. It's not comfortable. I think Crawford will be the same heavier. If he will be in his shape, he will beat Canelo."

Canelo will start looking for his next opponent soon. Crawford's team will likely make an offer to the Mexican star. The boxing world will watch with interest to see if this ambitious matchup comes to fruition.
