Legendary boxing analyst Teddy Atlas thinks Moses Itauma could become the youngest heavyweight champion ever. The British boxer might beat Mike Tyson's long-standing record.
Tyson grabbed the WBC heavyweight title in November 1986. He knocked out Trevor Berbick in two rounds at just 20 years and 145 days old. No one's come close to that mark since.
Now, Atlas sees potential in Itauma. The young Brit has until May 19, 2025, to beat Tyson's record. He's off to a good start with 11 wins and no losses so far.
Itauma made waves recently in Saudi Arabia. He knocked out Demsey McKean in the first round on the undercard of the Oleksandr Usyk vs. Tyson Fury rematch.
Atlas shared his thoughts on The Fight With Teddy Atlas podcast. He called Itauma a "wonderkid" with a shot at history.
"He's a wonderkid. He's the only heavyweight on the horizon that has a shot to break Mike Tyson's record to become the youngest heavyweight champion of all time."
But Atlas doesn't think it'll be easy. Itauma's running out of time and lacks experience against top fighters.
"He only has six months to do it and I don't think they'll rush him. He's got the talent but he doesn't have the experience to fight an Usyk, a Fury or even a Dubois."
The veteran analyst trusts Itauma's promoter, Frank Warren, to make the right moves.
"I don't know if he'll break the record but he's in the running for it if they want to go in that direction. Frank Warren is a smart promoter and he'll go in the right direction and the direction that gives him the experience and development to not fight for a title but to win a title."
Atlas thinks Warren will focus on building Itauma's skills and experience. The goal isn't just to fight for a title, but to win one when the time's right.
Whether Itauma breaks the record or not, he's got the boxing world's attention. Fans will watch closely as he climbs the heavyweight ranks in the coming months.
