Jones Jr., once considered one of the greatest fighters of all time, recently shared his thoughts with Boxing Scene. He's confident he can match up with Paul in the ring.
"I am not really a full-fledged heavyweight, but I weigh probably what [Paul] weighs right now. It wouldn't be hard to match his weight, I guess. They do catchweights, so I'm sure we could figure out the right weight."
The former pound-for-pound king doesn't plan to take it easy on Paul if they meet in the ring.
"We can make it happen. The only thing different though is he will probably have to take me out because I'm coming to knock him out. I'm going to get him, or he's going to get me."
Jones Jr. acknowledges that facing Paul won't be a walk in the park. He points out that Paul's size and power make him a dangerous opponent.
"It would be very difficult to pick him apart because he is so powerful and big. He has power and is a dangerous puncher. I would beat him, I'm sure, but you would have to be on your A-game all night, especially at my age."
Paul has made a name for himself in boxing through clever self-promotion and carefully chosen opponents. He's mostly fought beatable foes, including former MMA stars and aging, smaller boxers. His only loss came against Tommy Fury in 2023.
Recently, Paul beat Mike Tyson in a one-sided bout in Texas. The younger fighter landed shots at will on the 58-year-old Tyson over eight rounds.
Jones Jr. has some experience with exhibition matches against older boxers. In 2020, he fought Tyson to a draw in an exhibition bout. More recently, in April 2023, he lost to Anthony Pettis, an MMA fighter making his pro boxing debut.
While a fight between Jones Jr. and Paul isn't officially on the cards yet, the boxing legend's interest has certainly sparked some buzz in the boxing world. Fans will have to wait and see if this intergenerational matchup becomes a reality.
