Tyson Fury thinks Deontay Wilder should hang up his gloves. The heavyweight champ shared his thoughts during a recent interview.
Fury and Wilder have a long history. They've fought three times, with Fury winning two of those bouts. Their first fight in 2018 ended in a draw, but it's remembered for Fury's incredible recovery after being knocked down in the final round. At that time, Fury was just coming back from a long break due to depression.
In their next two fights, Fury changed his approach. He became more aggressive and knocked out Wilder both times. These battles took a toll on both fighters.
Fury explained his view on the "Pound 4 Pound with Kamaru & Henry" show:
"Being truthful I'd like to see poor old Deontay retire from boxing. When I beat Wilder he was 44-0 with 43 KOs and he KOed the guy who went the distance with him in the rematch. So that means he knocked out every single person he ever faced and obviously lost the three fights to me. We took a lot of years out of each other's life. Even when he's come back and had a couple of fights since, he's only a shadow of his former glory. The only thing left about Deontay Wilder is his name."
Before facing Fury, Wilder was known for his powerful right hand. He had knocked out every opponent he'd faced. But since their trilogy, Wilder's performance has been mixed. He quickly knocked out Robert Helenius, but then lost on points to Joseph Parker. In his last fight in June, Zhilei Zhang knocked him out in five rounds.
Fury, known as "The Gypsy King," is currently training for a rematch with Oleksandr Usyk. He's looking to bounce back from his first-ever loss.
Despite Fury's advice, Wilder has said he'll keep fighting. But he hasn't announced when or who he'll face next.
