Shields and Canelo have earned the right to pick their challenges. She's got two Olympic Gold Medals and has dominated the female side of boxing. He's a four-weight champion with an all-action style that's made him the face of boxing.
Canelo's star power is immeasurable. He's lost just twice in 66 fights and remains undefeated at super middleweight. Fans want to see him fight Terence Crawford or David Benavidez, but Canelo doesn't seem keen.
Jake Paul has upset the boxing world by fighting 58-year-old Mike Tyson. Now he's calling out Canelo. Shields thinks the Mexican should take the bait.
"Which one of you guys that Jake Paul is calling out – and I'm gonna even say this for Mr King Canelo – if Jake Paul is calling you out talking about he can beat you in a fight, why won't you just whoop his ass? Just do it!"
Shields told Fight Hub TV that Canelo should stop dismissing Paul as not a real boxer and prove it in the ring.
"What is all this, 'oh he hasn't earned the fight with me, he isn't that great, he's not a real a boxer'? Well, show he not a real boxer. Shut him up. It's a cheque. I heard that he made 40 million tonight and Tyson made 20 million. Hey, if they're gonna pay Canelo that type of money for a guy who can't fight, for a guy who they say not a good boxer. Come on now. Let's be real."
Canelo has said he'll only consider exhibition fights when he's done at the top level. He's still got some time left at the pinnacle of the sport.
Paul keeps calling for the big payday, but for now, it looks like Canelo's not biting.
