Mike Tyson couldn't move like he used to in his fight with Jake Paul. That's what Roy Jones Jr noticed when he watched the recent bout.
Jones Jr fought Tyson in an exhibition match back in 2020. The fight, called "Lockdown Knockdown," ended in a split draw. But the recent fight between Tyson and Paul was very different.
Paul beat Tyson easily on points in their eight two-minute round fight. Tyson, who's now 58, barely threw a punch against the 27-year-old Paul. The fight was supposed to happen in July but got pushed back because Tyson had some health problems.
Jones Jr shared his thoughts on the fight in a recent interview. He said:
"Tyson's legs didn't look the same as when he fought me. He could not attack Jake as freely and often as he attacked me. He attacked me pretty much all night long."
Jones Jr thinks there could be a few reasons for this. He said:
"Maybe he had a knee injury. Or maybe those four years could have taken a toll. Mike said he went through so much he nearly died. Had he been the same person as [when he fought me], he definitely would have beat Jake."
Paul, who's only lost once in his 12 fights (to Tommy Fury), said he never felt Tyson's famous power. He even claimed that Fury hits harder.
It's a far cry from the Mike Tyson who used to be known as "Iron Mike" or "The Baddest Man On The Planet" before he retired in 2005. But at 58, and nearly 20 years after hanging up his gloves, it's not surprising that Tyson isn't the same fighter he once was.
