Errol Spence Jr. thinks Terence Crawford can beat Canelo Alvarez. The former welterweight champion shared his views in a recent chat with Fight Hub TV.
Crawford just moved up to super-welterweight and won a world title. He's now a champion in four weight classes after beating Israil Madrimov. At 37, the fighter from Omaha, Nebraska, wants to face Canelo before he retires.
Canelo holds titles in four divisions and fights at super-middleweight. That's 14 pounds heavier than Crawford's current weight class. But Spence believes Crawford can handle the jump.
"It could happen, I mean why not? If Crawford wants to challenge himself to be great then let him try to be great you know, so I'm with it."
Spence told Fight Hub TV he'd root for Crawford if the fight happens.
"I'll be going for 'Bud' if he fights Canelo, I'll be going for him. I don't know if he's going to win or lose but I'll definitely be going for Crawford. I think if anybody can pull it off he can pull it off."
Spence pointed out that Canelo has moved up in weight before. The Mexican star fought at 175 pounds against Sergey Kovalev and Dmitry Bivol.
"He's chasing greatness so why not? Canelo went up to 175 and fought Kovalev and fought the other guy [Bivol] too, so if he can do it, and he started at 147, so if he doing then why can't Crawford do it."
Right now, neither Canelo nor Crawford have fights lined up. Canelo seemed uninterested in the match-up at first. But he might be warming up to the idea. He's beaten most top fighters at super-middleweight and doesn't seem keen on facing David Benavidez.
As for Spence, he last fought Crawford and lost. He might move up to super-welterweight himself, with talks of a fight against Sebastian Fundora.
Crawford's recent win over Madrimov made him a four-weight world champion. The victory puts him in a strong position to chase even bigger fights.
