Terence Crawford wants to move up two more weight classes to fight Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. Crawford's bold plan comes after only one fight at super-welterweight.
The weight difference is significant. Crawford must gain 14 more pounds to match Canelo's weight. Canelo has never lost at super-middleweight. His only defeats came against Floyd Mayweather at a catchweight in 2013 and Dmitry Bivol at light-heavyweight in 2022.
Caleb Plant, who fought Canelo for the undisputed super-middleweight title in 2021, shared his thoughts on the potential matchup. Plant, known as 'Sweethands', put up a good fight against Canelo before being stopped in the eleventh round.
In an interview with Cigar Talk, Plant said:
"In general, no [I don't like big weight jumps] but Terence, he's a special breed. Thus far, when he's set out to do something he's accomplished it. Terence Crawford is not just any fighter. In that sense I would be interested."
Plant believes Crawford has a shot against Canelo:
"I think he has a chance. Whether he does or he doesn't, that's for them to figure out. Terence is a special breed like I said before, so I would tune in. I'd be interested to see that."
Canelo seemed dismissive of the bout in the past. But now, with fewer options for big fights, he might be more open to it. The Mexican star's rematch with Bivol is no longer happening, so he'll consider all offers.
Both Crawford and Canelo are four-division world champions, adding to the intrigue of this potential matchup.
Plant recently scored an impressive stoppage win over Trevor McCumby, moving him closer to another title shot. His insights on the Crawford-Canelo matchup carry weight given his experience against Canelo.
The boxing world waits to see if this ambitious cross-division fight will materialize. Crawford's track record of achieving his goals makes this an exciting possibility, despite the significant weight difference.
