Jack Catterall Discloses Surprising Pay for Elite Sparring Sessions: "It's Not About the Money"

Jack Catterall, a super-lightweight contender from Chorley, has opened up about his sparring sessions with boxing legends Floyd Mayweather and Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. The fighter, known as 'El Gato', shared details about the payments he ...

Catterall's career took an interesting turn in 2022 when he lost a controversial decision to Josh Taylor. Many boxing fans believed Catterall should have become the undisputed champion that night. He got his revenge in 2023, winning the rematch by unanimous decision, though no belts were on the line.

In a chat with heavyweight boxer Dave Allen, Catterall revealed his experiences sparring with Mayweather back in 2015. The session happened during Mayweather's preparation for the Pacquiao fight.

"It was my first proper training camp abroad. I spent 8 weeks there, and they paid me $2500 per week. We'd show up Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 3 pm. Floyd would roll in anywhere between 3:30 and 5 pm. There were about 10 of us sparring partners."

Catterall didn't just make up the numbers. He managed to catch Mayweather with a lead right hook, showing he could hang with the best.

Shortly after the Mayweather camp, Catterall got a call to spar with Canelo Alvarez. The Mexican star was getting ready to fight James Kirkland.

"They paid me $1750 for two weeks, plus a $50 daily bonus. They also covered my flights. We'd spar on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at Canelo's gym in his mountain house. We'd do 8 four-minute rounds, and I'd take the last 4. Canelo was all about slipping and rolling, and he was very respectful."

These experiences helped Catterall sharpen his skills, learn new tricks, and get used to fighting away from home. They also provided a nice income boost for the young fighter.

Catterall's next big test is coming up soon. He's set to face Regis Prograis on October 26 in Manchester. The fight was originally postponed due to an injury, but now it's back on track.

Dave Allen, who talked with Catterall about these experiences, runs a YouTube channel where he often discusses the financial side of boxing, including sparring payments. These insights give fans a peek behind the curtain of professional boxing, showing how even up-and-coming fighters can earn money and gain invaluable experience by helping the sport's biggest names prepare for their fights.
