Crawford beat Spence in their undisputed welterweight championship fight last year. He dominated the contest, knocking Spence down three times before stopping him in the ninth round. The fight was initially billed as a 50/50 contest, but Crawford proved to be in a league of his own.
After that, both fighters moved up in weight. Crawford made his debut at 154 lbs against Israil Madrimov and won a decision. He became a four-weight world champion and picked up the WBA title in the process.
Now, Crawford's main goal in boxing seems to be a fight with Canelo. Saudi boxing head Turki Alalshikh even said Canelo is the only opponent Crawford will return to the ring for.
In an interview with Fight Hub TV, Spence shared his thoughts on the potential Crawford-Canelo fight:
"It could happen, I mean why not? If Crawford wants to challenge himself to be great then let him try to be great you know, so I'm with it."
Spence made it clear he'll be rooting for his former rival if the fight happens:
"I'll be going for 'Bud' if he fights Canelo, I'll be going for him. I don't know if he's going to win or lose but I'll definitely be going for Crawford. I think if anybody can pull it off he can pull it off."
The Texas native compared Crawford's potential move to Canelo's past weight jumps:
"He's chasing greatness so why not. Canelo went up to 175 and fought Kovalev and fought the other guy [Bivol] too, so if he can do it, and he started at 147, so if he doing then why can't Crawford do it."
While Crawford chases the Canelo fight, the Mexican superstar is set to defend his three super-middleweight belts against Edger Berlanga. The fight is scheduled for September 14 in Las Vegas.
