Vasiliy Lomachenko will fight George Kambosos Jr. in Australia this Sunday for the IBF lightweight title. If he wins, his next potential bout could be against Shakur Stevenson in the fall. This series of fights could set the stage for Lomachenko becoming the undisputed champion.
Lomachenko, aged 36, faces the challenge of competing in a younger fighter's territory, which is a recognized advantage for Kambosos Jr. Boxing promoter Bob Arum underscored Kambosos's strengths, noting, "Kambosos is very good. Even though he doesn't come from Perth, he's fighting on home territory, which means something."
Besides aiming for a fight with Stevenson later this year, Lomachenko has future plans to vie for the WBO title on May 18 against either Emanuel Navarrete or Denys Berinchyk. He might also face Gervonta Davis next year for the WBA belt as part of his goal to claim the undisputed lightweight championship.
Discussing age-related challenges in lighter weight divisions, Arum remarked on Lomachenko's situation: "Lomachenko is super-talented, but again there is his age, particularly in the lighter-weight divisions, where age is more of a factor than in the heavyweight divisions."
Regarding a potential mega-fight between Stevenson and Lomachenko, Arum described it as appealing to avid boxing fans due to their skill levels.
"I have this other fighter, Shakur Stevenson. So if Lomachenko wins and Shakur – who is scheduled to fight in July – wins then for the fall do a Lomachenko-Shakur fight. Every serious boxing fan will be watching that in awe between two great technicians fighting for a unified title," said Arum.
