Former world champion and current commentator and analyst Paul Malignaggi has pounced on the criticism of outright world super middleweight champion Saul Alvarez.
"Canelo has to do the right thing. He's an athlete. The hamster wheel has to spin. If you stifle it, you set a bad precedent for everybody else. That's why we have a generation that hasn't fought anyone. Imagine if Muhammad Ali had behaved the way Canelo did. Muhammad Ali fought everyone in his prime and that's why boxing became so great. In the 80's boxing was all over television and had high ratings. Why? Because Ali was fighting the toughest boxers of his generation: George Foreman, Ken Norton. He acted like a champion," ProBox TV quoted Malignaggi as saying.
