During the WBC Congress in Mexico, Eddie Reinoso, the coach and manager of the WBC Super Middleweight Champion Saul Alvarez (57-1-2, 39 KOs), announced that his protégé wants to fight the cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu (28-2, 25 KOs).

The leadership of the World Boxing Council agreed to the fight, and it is possible that next year Canelo will try to win the championship title in his fifth weight category. So far, Alvarez has not fought above the light heavyweight limit.

Before that, Makabu still has to fight Thabiso Mchunu. This fight was supposed to take place in mid-December, but the boxer's team from the Democratic Republic of the Congo has asked for more time to prepare and now wants to organize a fight in January or February.

If Canelo confirms the move to a higher weight, David Benavidez will be given the opportunity to fight for an interim belt in the weight category up to 76 kg. His rival can be Canadian David Lemieux.
