In the main event of the evening at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Saul Alvarez (57-1-2, 39 KOs) scored a spectacular eleventh round KO victory over Caleb Plant (21-1, 12 KOs) to become the first boxer in history to unify all WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO supermiddleweight belts.
As the fight progressed, Alvarez applied pressure and attacked from mid-range, while Plant tried to box from defense and counterattack. The Mexican boxer, who worked combinations of punches, was more effective, and traditionally his left punches were more dangerous.
The American tried to answer with single, but accentuated punches. Plant was slowing down noticeably with each round, and Canelo was gaining more and more advantage. The efficiency of Alvarez's attacks was not the most devastating, but he did not give the American boxer much room to maneuver.
In the eleventh round, the Mexican was finally able to get a hold of his opponent and sent Plant to the floor with a left side kick. The American was able to get up, but was not yet able to defend himself. The fight continued, but a series of unanswered punches ended with a hard right jab and the fight was stopped.
Canelo also became the first Mexican in history to combine all four championship belts. The Mexican earned a guaranteed $40 million on that performance. His purse could be raised by proceeds from the sale of pay-per-view broadcasts in the United States. Plant's purse was $10 million.
