Wilder traded Breland for Malik Scott and then repeatedly criticized Breland, the former world champion as a pro and Los Angeles Olympics champion. The replacement should have helped him get a revenge, but even with Scott in Wilder's corner, he again lost to Fury by knockout in the eleventh round.

"Mark Breland is a teacher, mentor and great coach. He has all the references and qualifications and I consider him an elite coach. There are a lot of "shifters" right now who only pretend to be coaches. Breland is a humble student of the game and one of the best coaches out there," said Mayweather Jr., one of the greatest athletes in boxing history.

After his defeat in February 2020 by seventh-round technical knockout, Wilder started blaming everyone around him. Fury allegedly cheated him, rearranged his gloves, had help from the ref, and assistant coach Breland poisoned the water in the locker room, which was supposed to weaken the Bronze Bomber. "I felt bad already coming into the ring", Wilder claimed after his second fight with Fury.
