WBC, WBA super middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez believes he will beat Gennady Golovkin if they meet in their third fight. Canelo entered the ring last month in his only fight in 2020 when he took a decisive victory over previously undefeated Callum Smith to win two championship titles.
Canelo (54-1-2, 36 KOs) in the next fight will probably make a mandatory defense of one of his titles on February 27 in Mexico against Avni Yildirim. In case of the victory, Canelo will fight in May and September.
One of the contenders for Canelo in 2021 is IBF middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KOs). In the past, Alvarez and Golovkin have met twice - both fights were close. The first time, in September 2017, the fight ended in a controversial draw. Golovkin and Alvarez met a year later and Canelo won by majority decision.
Now Canelo believes that if they meet in the third fight, Golovkin will have to move up to the super middleweight and he will not make any concessions about the intermediate weight. Canelo also believes that at this stage in their career, he is likely to do serious damage to 38-year-old Golovkin.
“I don't need to prove anything to anyone, I've already done my job by beating him twice, and now I want to stay at 168 pounds, and if Golovkin wants to get up, let's see what happens if my fans really want it. I perform at 168 and I don't have to do any favors to anyone. Our goal is to unite the super middleweight titles,” Canelo told The Ring.
“I feel good in this category, I feel strong. I feel like I'm at my peak and I continue to work hard. If this fight happens for the third time, then I will most likely be able to knock him out and inflict serious damage on him,” Alvarez said.
