Saul Alvarez has left vacant the belt of the WBA middleweight champion, which he won in 2018, beating Gennady Golovkin in rematch.

The Mexican on December 19, beating Callum Smith on points, became the WBA and WBC super middleweight champion. Canelo still holds the 160 pounds WBC franchise title, and it is unknown if he will be stripped of that title by the World Boxing Council.

Despite Alvarez's decision, the WBA still has two middleweight champions: “regular” Ryota Murata (16-2, 13 KOs) and “interim” Chris Eubank Jr. (29-2, 22 KOs).
