Eric Gomez, the president of the Golden Boy promotion representing Saul Alvarez, says that next year we can see Canelo’s third fight against Gennady Golovkin. But for this, both opponents must agree with the terms of this fight, mainly financial.
“We talked about the third match with Golovkin, this meeting would be extremely exciting. Canelo is ready to give his fans such a duel. I hope that we will surprise everyone and organize this confrontation next year. They both understand that the first two fights were a great success. Financially, the third fight would be very useful for them. They are both open to cooperation,” Gomez said.
The first fight of Alvarez and Golovkin in September 2017 ended in a controversial draw. A year later, the victory was on the side of Canelo, who scored by majority decision of the judges. Now the plans of the two stellar middleweights are as follows: Golovkin must defend his IBF middleweight title in the fall in a fight against mandatory challenger Kamil Szeremeta, and is now preparing for this fight, although there is still no official confirmation of the duel. Canelo also has yet to declare his opponent for September. To date, the Mexican team has five candidates: Sergiy Derevyanchenko, Callum Smith, Fedor Chudinov, John Ryder and David Lemieux.
