The duel between WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (33-3-1, 28 KOs) and mandatory challenger for his title Anthony Yarde (18-0, 17 KOs), which took place on August 24 and was the main event of the evening on the Tractor ice arena in Chelyabinsk, Russia. In case of victory, Kovalev practically guaranteed himself a multi-million dollar check for the fight against the highest-grossing athlete to date, Saul Alvarez of Mexico. For the undefeated Yarde, this was the first chance in his career to challenge the championship title.
