Gvozdyk defends title

WBC light heavyweight champion Oleksander Gvozdyk (17-0, 14 KOs) successfully defended his title, winning a strange technical knockout over Doudou Ngumbu (38-9, 14 KOs) in the fifth round in the main event of the evening at 2300 Arena in South Philadelphia.

Gvozdyk was winning on points, when suddenly Ngumbu retreated, complaining of an injury to his right leg. The fight was stopped until the doctor, the fighter and his corner conferred. After a few minutes, referee Erik Dali officially stopped the fight, and it was announced that Ngumbu could not continue due to injury. The time was 0:58.

In less than five rounds, Gvozdyk landed 47 punches out of 204, and Ngumbu - 18 out of 108.

“It was not what I expected, but I did my best,” Gvozdyk said after the fight. “Sometimes it happens in boxing. It is what it is. My goal is to unify titles. Now I will wait and see what my team will offer me further.”
