UFC President Dana White confirmed that the lightweight champion Conor McGregor was ready to replace the injured Max Holloway for the sake of a fight with Frankie Edgar.

"It's true. Conor declared his readiness to take the fight with Edgar. The problem was that Edgar was not in his weight class, and we already agreed on a fight with Ortega. Frankie and Bryan had already signed their contracts by that time. When Conor announced that he was ready to fight, there were only 24 days left before the tournament. So there was no point," said White at a press conference after UFC 222.

Yesterday Ortega knocked out Edgar in the first round.
